(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - A new book, “A Gift for Muslim Couple”, on library shelves in Canada, advises Muslim men to beat their wives to control them under male supremacy. This has sparked outrage among the Muslim minority in Canada.
Farzana Baig, a wife of a mosque imam, told media “it is not like that in our community… my husband does not beat me!”
The book says “it might be necessary to restrain (the wife) with strength or even to threaten her”, and advises a husband may “beat her by hand or stick, withhold money from her or pull (her) by the ears”!! “But” – the book redresses – “should refrain from beating her excessively”…
Alongside many Canadian Muslims, who ridiculed the book, Farzana’s (mosque imam) husband says: “This is totally wrong (…) it does not represent our community, it is not proper reading and it should not be out there!” And yes; the word “beating” of wives, is indeed used in a verse of the Holy Quran, but prominent rational Muslim scholars maintain it does not mean “physical abuse”.
They stress that Prophet Muhammad (p.) generally used to discourage his followers from taking this measure. Plus, there is no narration of the Prophet striking one of his wives; rather, he used to withdraw when angered.
In Islam, the marriage of a man and a woman is not merely a financial and physical arrangement of living together but a contract, to lead a happy enjoyable life.
“We were the first religion to give power to women”, said Wasim Vania, President of the Islamic Society of Toronto; and proceeded: “We do not have hatred in our hearts and we do not teach this… as humans we cannot control everything, but we should be able to control what goes on a book shelf!” Mohammed, from the Muslim Welfare Center, was also angry, and was keen to express how “surprised” he was that the book was published, and “I – as a Muslim – am angry to be portrayed in this light.”
It was, indeed, a slap on the face the late Religious Authority, H.E. Sayyed Muhammad Hussein Fadlallah (ra), gave to those claiming Islam would introduce such inhumane jurisprudence, not very long ago, as he issued a juristic rule allowing married women brutalized by their husbands to fight back to defend themselves, and even to learn martial arts in extreme cases, where they find their lives in danger before a husband not treating them with the piety Allah demands of him!! Sayyed Fadlullah stressed that God created all humans equal; thus, man should be sure he is not “superior” before Allah if he treats his wife with a tough manner, unharmonious with what Islam preaches.
Islam is the number one “non-Christian faith” in the Roman Catholic Canada. This story had to have the whole Canadian Muslim community come together, in one voice, to condemn such mentalities still understanding Islam in ways so alien to Islam… and the community well did!
